The idealistic prison guard Eva faces the dilemma of her lifetime when a young man from her past is transferred to the prison where she works. Without revealing the secret the two share, she asks to be moved to his block, the toughest and most violent in the prison. And so begins an unsettling psychological thriller in which Eva’s sense of justice puts her morality and her future at stake.

“There are more males than females in the film, but I did not want Eva to appear like an outcast just because she is a woman. There are a number of female officers in the film, and Eva is the only one that separates from the group. What separates Eva is not her gender, but rather her level of implication. Still, of course, she’s a more maternal figure in a very masculine, violent environment, and that plays into the larger themes of the film. […] I think that the film is ultimately about a woman who is herself imprisoned by grief, and her need to break out of that prison. Revenge and forgiveness are two possible ways to do so. But the film hopefully goes beyond saying one is right, and one is wrong. For me it is important to leave the audience with some questions…”  (Gustav Möller)

Gustav Möller (Gothenburg, Sweden, 1988) graduated from the National Danish Film School in 2015, his thesis film the short In Darkness. In 2018, he made his feature film debut with The Guilty, which had its world premiere at Sundance, where it won the Audience Award in the category “World Cinema Dramatic.” The film went on to win an array of awards around the world, including seven Danish Film Awards, including Best Film, Best Director, and Best Original Screenplay. Möller also co-created the 2022 TV series The Dark Heart, a five-part psychological drama, together with writer Oskar Söderlund. It, too, premiered at the Sundance Film Festival.
