Massimo Carlotto is one of several renowned novelists to have accepted Sergio Ferrentino’s challenge to try their hand at the radio drama, to write stories conceived expressly to be recited. None of these stories will air on the radio, however, but will be recorded as podcasts. Equipped with headsets, audiences will be able to watch these recordings: they’ll see the actors move around the microphones, hear doors slam that no one has closed, and listen to music that no one is playing. The audience will witness seemingly contradictory scenes, such as a character greeting everyone and then leaving. They will only have to close their eyes to realize that that character hasn’t spoken at the microphone for some time; it’s as if they are no longer there. In other words, everything that happens on stage will be a feast only for the ears. For audiences, it will be like sitting in a radio studio while the “on air” sign is on. In Il giardino di Gaia, the titular character has created a perfect world, in which she keeps a tight grip on her husband, son and the family’s position in town. When she discovers her husband wants to leave her for another woman, she acts to save her marriage. Not because she’s madly in love with him, but because in her world, separation is not allowed. The drama looks at those crushed by social conventions, who seek alternatives in double lives, who secretly replicate affections and relationships to bear the punishment of inescapable unhappiness. Gaia is convinced that imposing her way of life is the only way to save the people she loves. But Gaia doesn’t spare her victims, even if they’re not entirely innocent. Sergio Ferrentino, a radio writer, presenter and director, and the historic voice of Radio Popolare and RAI Radio2, in 2011 he founded in Milan Fonderia Mercury. Inspired by Orson Welles, Fonderia Mercury experiments with and produces new languages and unexpected contaminations. Radio, theatre, literature, the web and visual arts. The Fonderia brings to the Courmayeur Noir in Festival the show “Il giardino di Gaia” on Saturday December 15.
