Twenty true, authentic stories by inmates writing about the circumstances that led to their incarceration. Some are even serving life sentences. Free of rhetoric, sometimes disarmingly raw, in their stories we glimpse into the lives of protagonists who have lived beyond limits, learn the codes that regulate prisoners’ relationships, and feel the despair of suspended lives in the overcrowded prison world. The 20 stories from jail are the finalists of the second edition of the Goliarda Sapienza Literary Award, an initiative that pairs inmate authors with extraordinary writers, journalists and artists who serve as their tutors.
Antonella Bolelli Ferrera (Bologna) is a professional journalist and writer. For over 10 years she has written and hosted cultural and social programs, and radio dramas, for Radio RAI, including La Storia in giallo, Rosso Scarlatto, Cuore di tenebra, Sulla cresta dell’onda, Speciali di Radio 3 and Alle 8 della sera. She especially loves adapting the biographies of great personalities shrouded in mystery. She has published: Il fiore e la spada; Borderlife - Storie celebri di follia, devianze e tragici destini with criminologist Francesco Bruno; Inquiete - Storie di artiste sublimi e femmine dannate; Segreti d’Oriente; and Volete sapere chi sono io? Racconti dal carcere. She conceived and organizes the Goliarda Sapienza Literary Award, Stories from Prison, which pairs inmates with established Italian authors. Along with award-winning poet-author-essayist Elio Pecora, she is a founding member the inVerso association, which works to bring literature and writing to the socially disadvantaged.
