Mangart is a mountain that lies between Friuli and Slovenia, along the Italian border. It is also the backdrop to Andrea Gennari Daneri’s novel, in which solitary rock climber Flavio Ferrari witnesses a helicopter accident. It is 2005, Flavio has no one at home, and no one knows him in Friuli. The accident is just the prologue to a series of events that will take him back to the not-so-distant past, and the war in Bosnia and its massacres. Yet when he’s given the chance to retreat, he will nevertheless forge ahead, loyal to himself and his “rigidly ethical and essentially autistic” personality, climbing on, as if before a wall of rock and ice, through the crevices of history.
Andrea Gennari Ranieri (1965) graduated in 1992 in Political Science from Milan’s Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore, where he studied with Gianfranco Miglio. He is founder of the Pareti Sport Center in Parma, the first and largest rock and mountain climbing center in Italy. He is editor of the rock and mountain climbing magazine Pareti, and author of various specialized guidebooks and Train, the best-selling book in Europe on rock climbing. A controversial and highly outspoken journalist, he is, in his own words, “a man who had the double fortune of having hands to hold himself up with and hands to write with; one eye for entertainment and the other for analyzing the evolution of things.” Mangart is his first novel.
