The second novel of the Trilogia del male again centers on Mike Balistreri, whose difficult character is a result of injustices endured during his turbulent childhood in post-colonial, pre-Gaddafi Libya. The story is set in 1982, in Rome, “the breeding ground of our country’s many contradictions.” Lost in a haze of alcohol, poker and sex, Commissioner Balistreri is listlessly investigating the death of a South American student when he realizes that the young woman’s murder is connected not only to Claudia Teodori, a starlet destined for success at the dawn of commercial television in Italy, but also the death of little Nadia, the ill-fated love of his Libyan childhood. Says Constantini: “Alle radici del male is part prequel, part sequel. The first place takes place in Libya in the second half of the 1970s, during Balistreri’s adolescence. The first unsolved crimes are there, along with the terrible injustices he experienced. Part of the mystery will be revealed, but obviously the third chapter still remains, the true sequel to Tu Sei il Male”.
Roberto Costantini (Tripoli, Lybia, 1952), an engineer and corporate consultant, is today a manager of the Luiss Guido Carli University in Rome. His debut novel Tu sei il male, winner of a 2011 Scerbanenco Prize Special Mention, is the first installment of a trilogy that is intended to capture contemporary Italy and was written, according to the author, “during my business airplane trips.” He adds: “I grew up reading Agatha Christie and the great American [noir] writers and Georges Simenon… For me, noir goes beyond blood. You need stories, the writer must recount something about the world.” The story takes place between two World Cups won by Italy because, says Costantini, “If you want to describe our country how can you ignore that contagious euphoria that infects all of us during a match?”
