  Respiro corto
by Massimo Carlotto

Einaudi, 2012
The Mafia has changed. It no longer looks like the movies of Francis Ford Coppola, or the world of the Russian tycoons. Today’s mafiosos study at prestigious universities, come from all four corners of the world, and settle everywhere. Lacking all scruples, their only ethic is to make money - and achieve personal success. Respiro corto begins in the forests of Chernobyl, and like the radioactive lumber extracted from this land, it radiates throughout the entire world. The story centers on a small group of contemporary mafiosos who met while studying economy in Leeds and who are now fighting old bosses, the police and all of mankind in an attempt to take control of Marseilles.

Massimo Carlotto (Padua, 1956), made headlines in 1976 when, as a 19-year-old militant of the left-wing Lotta Continua movement, he was accused of murder. Acquitted after a first trial and later sentenced on an appeal, Carlotto fled to Mexico but was captured three years later by the police and extradited to Italy. The conviction caused great controversy, and numerous intellectuals protested it, including Jorge Amado. In 1993, he was granted a pardon from the President of the Republic. Many of his novels have been adapted for the cinema, starting with Il fuggiasco, about his time as a fugitive. His best-known character is Alligatore, a.k.a. private detective Marco Buratti, the protagonist of six novels and various short stories. Carlotto’s books have been published in France, Great Britain, Spain, Greece, Holland and the US, among other countries.
