  The Guilty One
by Lisa Ballantyne

Piatkus, 2012
Well-mannered, 11-year-old Sebastian Croll has large green eyes, delicate features and a forlorn gaze. When he is accused of having brutally smashed in the skull of his friend Ben Stocker with a brick, Daniel Hunter is hired to defend him, because of his extensive experience defending minors, from 15-year-olds accused of having shot fellow gang members, to teenagers who steal to buy drugs. The evidence against Sebastian is substantial, and the boy’s behavior isn’t helping dispel suspicions either. But the more the solicitor investigates the case, the more he uncovers about the Croll family, and the more he realizes that Sebastian’s life is marked by domestic violence and fear. A journey into the folds of the boy’s soul soon becomes, for Daniel, a journey into his own childhood memories of abuse, solitude and foster care.
