Appunti di un venditore di donne

autore
Giorgio Faletti
In the late 1970s, while the Red Brigades kidnapped Aldo Moro and the Mafia ruled over Sicily, in Milan, alongside famous gangs led by Francis Turatello and Renato Vallanzasca, there emerged what was coined “Milano da bere” (“Milan to drink”), as restaurants and bars where the wealthy could squander their money mushroomed. The novel centers on the enigmatic Bravo, a cynic castrated as punishment for a grave mistake. Bravo sells women and his few friends include neighbor Lucio, a blind guitarist who shares Bravo’s passion for cryptograms. When Bravo falls for Carla, who is fleeing poverty for prostitution, he gets sucked into a nightmare. Framed for a series of murders he did not commit, he becomes a scapegoat hunted by the police, organized crime and terrorists.
Says the author: “Usually, our little-known historical events in Italy are incomprehensible and not taken seriously by foreigners, who refuse to believe they’re true. But the Aldo Moro case is an exception, and a terribly tragic story.”
