Shadow and Light is set in Berlin in 1927, where nothing is what it seems. Against the backdrop of this corrupt and devastated city, ambitious chief of the Kriminalpolizei Nikolai Hoffner is called to investigate the mysterious death of Gerhard Thyssen, found dead in the bathroom of a luxurious suite of the UFA, which is battling it out with the Hollywood studios to be the top film production company in the world. But what seems like suicide is instead revealed to be a torrid web of sex, drugs and dirty affairs revolving around a revolutionary technology that will change the course of cinema: talking pictures. The investigation involves director Fritz Lang and his wife Thea von Harbou, crime boss Alby Pimm and editor Hugenberg, a top member of the reactionary right. The Weimar Republic is beginning to crumble, and in the streets the sound of marching boots can already be heard.
Jonathan Rabb, a writer with a passion for theatre, lives with his wife and two children in New York, where he teaches creative writing at NYU and writes for Opera News. Shadow and Light is part of a trilogy – the first book of which was Rosa, on Rosa Luxemburg – featuring Nikolai Hoffner.
