  Boy A

Jonathan Trigell
Jack is 24 but is as naïve as a babe. He’s never gotten drunk, never had a girlfriend, never even bought himself a pair of shoes. Jack is not even his real name, he chose it from a book. He spent almost his entire life in jail, and is now out with a job, a new identity and a friend, Terry. Terry is the only person who knows Jack’s true identity. Fifteen years ago, Jack and another boy raped and killed a girl their age. Although the community welcomes him when open arms, when his past resurfaces Jack becomes a monster in people’s eyes and not even the newspapers will tolerate him circulating freely among them. Nor consider forgiving him. Based on a true event – the murder of toddler James Bulger, who was killed in 1993 by two 10-year-olds – Boy A is an extraordinarily compelling and mature debut novel, a clear and ruthless account of how difficult it is to shed one’s past, and how mass hysteria knows no bounds.
Called “a gem” by British daily The Independent, in 2007 Boy A was made into a film for Channel 4. Directed by John Crowley and starring Peter Mullan, it won a coveted television BAFTA award in 2008 and in Italy will be distributed by 01.
