Pajaro en Mano is set in Marbella, a noted Spanish tourist spot as well as well a center of crime. The main character is Luis Moran, an Argentinean photographer whose only obsession is to murder Captain Montoja, the architect of numerous killings in Argentina, and then kill himself. In the meantime, he lives with his grandfather, also a photographer, a parrot and the mysterious, fiery Claudia. Moran gets caught up in a dirty money laundering affair, through which he meets a diverse series of characters who are never what they seem and who will ultimately and dramatically reveal their true identities. As in many of his novels, in which Juan Madrid always blends passion and police intrigue, here too he offers a possible recipe for fighting crime. Among the Russian mafia, South American death squads and Italian lawyers involved in money laundering, it seems obvious that one can never completely eradicate the rotten elements of a city, in this case Marbella. Thus: “If you can’t get them all, try to at least get some”.
Journalist and writer Juan Madrid (Málaga, 1947) was imprisoned during the Franco dictatorship for his anti-fascist political ideas. He has worked for many publications, including Cambio 16, and writes numerous reportages. His debut novel, A Friend’s Kiss, was published in 1980. Since then he has written over 40 books translated into 12 languages, as well as for the cinema. He lives between Madrid and Malaga. He does not drive, has no cell phone and does not use the Internet.
