Lawyer Robert Stern agrees to an unusual meeting outside of Berlin with his ex-girlfriend, Carina, a nurse. He’s not surprised when he sees her arrive in an ambulance and then introduces him to one of her patients, a 10-year-old boy needing help. The boy, Simon, is terminally ill and firmly convinced that in a former life he was a murderer. Simon is haunted by terrible nightmares, connected to mysterious disappearances that are still unresolved. Stern and Carina soon realize these are not just macabre fantasies of a sick boy. Moreover, Stern receives a mysterious video that makes the impossible seem possible: could his son, who died in infancy, still be alive? The voice on the video invites Stern to follow Simon’s visions if he wants to find out what really happened to his soon… After the success of The Spirit Breaker – the number one best-seller in Germany last year, over half a million copies sold, translated in over 10 languages – comes a new psychological thriller in which the violence is above all interior and therefore even more profound.
Sebastian Fitzek (Berlin, 1971) lives in Berlin with his companion, three dogs, two rabbits and a horse. He gave up his veterinary studies to get a law degree and before writing worked in radio and television. With The Spirit Breaker Fitzek inaugurated a new genre of thriller, which critics have called the “neuro-novel”. “Our brain is like a deep sea,” says the author. “It may be the last unexplored place on Earth, full of secrets just waiting to be discovered”. Fitzek has published five novels to date, all of which were hits. A film will be made of his first novel, Therapy.
