To give meaning to his present, each man also lives his past – a man convicted to life imprisonment only the past. Because of his past, Renato Vallanzasca’s future will be spent behind bars: he has robbed and killed. Out of “a sense of decency” towards his victims, he explains but never asks forgiveness. Out of “a sense of loyalty to himself” and his personal code of honor, he has always refused to collaborate with the police. In Fiore del Male, the notorious and extravagant criminal agrees to tell journalist Carlo Bonini his life story, to rummage through his memories. Without facile hypocrisy or abrupt, suspicious conversions. What emerges is a portrait of a man who after constructing his own negative image faces up to it. Not to disown it, but to accept its defeat. Vallanzasca’s is a violent story, full of surprises and never-before-told moments, a story whose roots have been exposed for the first time. Michele Placido adapted this book for a film he is currently shooting in Milan, starring Kim Rossi Stuart.
