American director Jennifer Lynch (whose Surveillance screened here at Mont Blanc) is presiding over the jury of the 22nd Courmayeur Noir in Festival, which runs today through December 16. In choosing the winner of the Black Lion for Best Film she is joined by actress-producer Francesca Neri, German actress Franziska Petri, Argentine director Santiago Amigorena and international playwright-director-actor Pippo Delbono.
To the long applause for Sacha Gervasi’s Hitchcock, Courmayeur has begun yet another showcase of new films and books, and fascinating personalities, confirming the good health of a multi-faceted genre that thrills both readers and moviegoers.
Screening tomorrow is Carl Colby’s highly anticipated documentary The Man Nobody Knew (11 am – Palanoir, Sala 2) about his controversial father, super spy William Colby, who ran the CIA during one of its most adventurous and controversial eras, which included the Vietnam War, Operation Gladio in Europe and the military coups in South America.
The first of this year’s three Italian competition titles will also screen: Toni D’Angelo’s second feature film L’innocenza di Clara, starring Chiara Conti as a “praying mantis,” will play at 6:30 pm at the Palanoir, Sala 2.
Rounding out the day’s screenings will be Oscar winner Lasse Hallström’s spectacular thriller The Hypnotist, based on the best-selling Swedish noir of this year, at 9 pm at the Palanoir (Sala 1).
All eyes are already turned towards the prestigious guests of the coming days: Gabriele Salvatores, who will show a sneak preview of scenes from his new film Siberian Education; Don Winslow, author of Savages and recipient of the 2012 Raymond Chandler Award; Carolina Crescentini, elected this year’s “Spirito Noir;” the inimitable Chloe Saint Laurent, star of Profiling; the journalists and directors of Wednesday’s event on Italian genre cinema, Vedo Nero; and the participants of this year’s main conference, The Mafias and Us.
