Born in London to a Canadian mother and an American father, Sacha Gervasi became known worldwide for Anvil! The Story of Anvil, whose many accolades include an Emmy and an Independent Spirit Award, both in 2010. He will be in town tomorrow, Monday December 10, to kick off the Courmayeur Noir in Festival, which opens with his highly anticipated Hitchcock, starring Sir Anthony Hopkins, Dame Helen Mirren and Scarlett Johansson.
The film is both a love story, between Hitch and his wife Alma Reville, and a look at the trials and tribulations behind the celebrated masterpiece Psycho (which Reville edited), which was plagued by production and media scandals at every turn. Gervasi also wrote the Fox Searchlight production, taking inspiration from Stephen Rebello’s book Alfred Hitchcock and the Making of Psycho.
The director is currently at work on the US remake of Norwegian director Morten Tyldum’s Headhunters, which won last year’s Noir in Festival and is based on the Jo Nesbo best seller.
The Festival’s official competition also begins tomorrow, at the Palanoir (entrance is free), with Peter Strickland’s Berberian Sound Studio, which pays homage to the golden age of the Italian “giallo,” the 1970s, with a game that blends nightmare and reality against a soundtrack and special effects that defined an entire generation, including Lamberto Bava, Lucio Fulci, Antonio Margheriti and Dario Argento. The film will be accompanied by British-Italian actor Cosimo Fusco. |
