  Gabriele Salvatores talks about his
Siberian education

 07/12/2012
It has become a tradition having Gabriele Salvatores at the Courmayeur Noir in Festival, talking to our audiences about the “noir heart” of his latest project, and this year is no exception. The director will be in Courmayeur on Wednesday, December 12, to give us a preview of his new film, Siberian Education, which comes out soon in Italy and is being sold worldwide by Westend Films. The director will be joined by Nicolai Lilin, the author of the internationally best-selling novel (translated into 14 languages) on which the film is based, and the film’s two young stars: Arnas Fedaravicius and Vilius Tumalavicius.

Salvatores’ new film is set in the faraway world of Siberia and its extremes, in which so-called “honest criminals” are required to follow a strict and sometimes surprisingly sharable code of life. The story follows the coming of age from childhood to adolescence of friends Kolima (Fedaravicius) and Gagarin (Tumalavicius). Raised with an austere Siberian education, in the face of growing consumerism and globalization the boys choose different paths. The cast includes John Malkovich, Peter Stormare and Eleanor Tomlinson.
Shot in Lithuania, often in harsh weather conditions, Siberian Education was written by Sandro Petraglia and Stefano Rulli with Salvatores, and produced by Cattleya with RAI Cinema. It film was lensed by Italo Petriccione, edited by Massimo Fiocchi and scored by Mauro Pagani.

Salvatores will show clips of several scenes in Courmayeur. “It is an honor for the festival,” say the event’s directors Giorgio Gosetti and Marina Fabbri, “to accompany the beginning of the new adventure of a great director and noir appassionato such as Salvatores. It also confirms the most fascinating aspect of our work, when filmmakers and writers are brought together by their shared passions.”
