Among the protagonists of the Official Selection, Michael Aloni of Nadav Lapid’s Israeli film Policeman stands out. The 26-year-old actor, who told audiences at the Jardin de l’Ange that he actively participated in the development of the film, said: “When [Policeman] screened for the first time at the Jerusalem Film Festival I was there with my parents. I remember they told me: ‘Something like this could never happen in Israel.’ Just a few months later they changed their mind, because in the meantime a big movement had formed to push for change. When I read the screenplay I immediately wanted to be part of the film because I think that the new generation, which is accused of being too passive, should instead be more active. I think the film is very important because it pushes for renewal, for a passing to action, naturally without using the violence of the revolutionary group at the center of the film.”
The film calls attention to Israel’s internal situation and social inequalities as well as the Palestinian conflict. “In its 63 years of existence,” said Aloni, “Israel has always lived in a state of necessity. All resources still go to the security of the country, and no one ever talks about internal problems. We’re still in a situation in which five or six families control the economy of the entire country.” |
