The exhibit SOL Levante NOIR/Rising Sun Noir – a collaboration between the Courmayeur Noir in Festival, the European Institute of Design (IED) in Milan and a partnership with Jikei Gakuen, a network of Japanese institute of design in Tokyo, Osaka, Sendai, Kukuoka and Nagoya – is a collection noir images by young Italian illustrators and their Japanese counterparts.
According to Rossella Bertolazzi of IED Visual Arts Milan: “The genre’s inexhaustible vitality has developed its own cultures, that also resonate throughout traditional cinema, and within a globalized world offer mirror and, ironically, contrasting evocations. As with other years, the students’ work was followed by the diabolical teaching of the eclectic Massimo Giacon. ”
Two worlds compared, two ways of interpreting the genre.
The Japanese students’ illustrations sprang from evocative themes such as Shadows, Night and Fear while the Italian students blend canonical elements and cultural short circuits.
The young designers were given total freedom, and the results are interesting. Most of the Westerners imagined a modern, urban, ruthless Japan of money, cruelty and a sense of honor among thieves, whereas the Japanese designed more metaphysical fears and atmospheres, dark infernos and ancient monsters.
Their work will be seen in the SOL levante NOIR/Rising Sun Noir exhibit that will be held during the 20th edition of the Courmayeur Noir in Festival, from December 7-13 at the Biblioteca Comunale in Viale Monte Bianco, Courmayeur.
“We are proud to have worked for years now with the young artists of the IED of Milan,” says Giorgio Gosetti, artistic director of the Courmayeur Noir in Festival, “and the international exchange of ideas between the Milan and Japanese institutes is perfectly suited to the celebrations of our 20th anniversary.”
