  Caine Kicks Off Festival

 08/12/2009
The 19th edition of the Courmayeur Noir in Festival has begun with the first competition films, the presentations of the books of the Dark Page and all the other sections that have already kicked off or at the starting gate.

As the Festival directors emphasized during the inauguration, this year’s edition will make audiences think, ask questions, find answers if possible and always, naturally, entertain. But in case these answers are hard to find, we’ll try again next year, at the 20th edition, as we were reminded by Courmayeur mayor Fabrizia Derriard, who officially opened the proceedings.

Meanwhile, in anticipation of the 20th anniversary celebrations, the first screenings at the Palanoir unveiled the new Festival trailer created by Frame by Frame Italia. Just more proof that every year is a good year for novelties!

The first competition film comes from France: Denis Dercourt’s Tomorrow at Dawn is a dramatic story about two brothers set in the complex world of role-playing games, of “weekend warriors” who don Napoleonic costumes and relive the glories of the emperor’s great battles.

But all the spotlights were shining on Michael Caine, the formidable star of British film Harry Brown by Daniel Barber, who presented the film to a packed house. “I’m sorry I couldn’t be there myself,” said Caine, “because I feel very strongly about the subject of this film. That’s real life you see on the screen, not fictitious violence. People my age need to remember how important the youth of today are, those who will inherit our world tomorrow. We have failed too many times. Now we have to understand how to offer them a second chance».

The arrival of Festival’s most highly anticipated star, Oscar-winning screenwriter Diablo Cody, who today will present Jennifer’s Body, was instead marked by adventure. She was stopped by customs officers because of problems over her real name on her passport, which were resolved as soon as she was recognized as the acclaimed writer of Juno.

But there are certainly plenty of bigger chills for an event full of suspense (that ends happily), as the Courmayeur Noir in Festival must be. For our second day of programming, we offer the beginning of the marathon of the Fox Crime mini-series Il Mostro di Firenze; the first finalists of the literary Scerbanenco Prize, who will meet audiences at the Jardin de l’Ange; celebrated German author Sebastian Fitzek (The Child); the panel Sardinia in Noir, coordinated by Marcello Fois; and the start of MiniNoir with a preview that will certainly delight the kids: Lilly the Witch: The Dragon and the Magic Book by Oscar winner Stefan Ruzowitzy.

There will also be a preview of the film Una Vita Tranquilla, which is currently in the editing phase and stars Toni Servillo, Marco D'Amore and Francesco Di Leva. Director Claudio Cupellini, producer Fabrizio Mosca and Carlo Brancaleoni of RAI Cinema will be on hand to present the work in progress.
