Gioia de Bigontina
Italy, late 1970s: Aldo Moro, a prominent member of the Christian Democrat Party, is kidnapped by the Red Brigades. The only news to arrive from him are letters from Moro, which the Red Brigades (BR) send to the press. In them, Moro pleads with the Italian government to collaborate with the kidnappers: his release in exchange for several of their members arrested by the police. When the state would not collaborate, Moro was killed.

The film is divided into several stories – a teacher who is arrested; several students who are kicked out of the Communist Party; a young man who is tortured as a suspect of political extremism; and the Italian government that opts for CIA help for the investigations – that converge in the overall tale to give audiences the clearest possible idea of the events during the “Lead Years.” Grimaldi’s point of view is simultaneously extremely critical and objective, and is an accusation against the terrorism of the BR, as well as the politics adopted by the Italian government, which was incapable of dealing with the events.
