Mokadelic, the band that scored the latest film by Gabriele Salvatores, As God Commands, will be in Courmayeur for Ancora Sulla Cattiva Strada: a jam session of words, images and music that Salvatores wanted to present as a gift to the 18th Courmayeur Noir in Festival, of evocations and memories of his new film. The film’s leads, Elio Germano and Filippo Timi, will also participate. The show, just over an hour long, will take place Sunday, December 7 at 9:30 pm at the Palanoir (Sala 1). It will be an international premiere and for now no other guests are scheduled to perform.
“It will be a mental backstage,” says Salvatores, “in which the story of the book and film is not told but evoked through the most irrational, most instinctive and freest of the arts – music. Through the film’s soundtrack we will try to depict evocations of the text, projecting clips of the film and reading passages from the novel. Elio, Filippo and I chose mostly pages that are not in the film, accompanied by poems by Pasolini, works from William Shakespeare, writings by Tibet’s Lama Yesce and words by Fabrizio De André. All are texts that helped the actors become their characters and construct the film’s emotional soul. The performance will be reminiscent of readings from the 1960s, when beat generation poets read their works to accompanying jazz music. Like the book, it will be divided into three parts: PRIMA – LA NOTTE – DOPO (BEFORE – NIGHT – AFTER).

The film project was first presented in Courmayeur 12 months ago, by Salvatores and the book’s author, Niccolò Ammaniti. A year later, the film, produced by Maurizio Totti for Colorado Film and RAI Cinem,a is being released on December 12 by 01 Distribution.
Mokadelic (www.mokadelic.com) are Alessio Mecozzi (guitar), Cristian Marras (bass), Alberto Broccatelli (drums), Maurizio Mazzenga (guitar), Luca Novelli (piano and guitar). They began playing music together as Moka in 2000 when the four original members – Alessio, Alberto, Cristian and Maurizio – met and created a series of instrumental improvisations. (Moka e.p.) In 2002, they produced their first CD, I Plan on Leaving Tomorrow. Since then, various songs of theirs have been included in national compilations and the band has played live with internationally known groups, including Explosions in the sky, Mono, Ulan Bator, Tarentel and Giardini di Mirò.
In 2004 they composed the soundtrack for the short Dove Dormono gli Aerei, part of the collective film Bambini (Pablo Distribuzione). In 2006 they finished their first studio album (at the Hopi Studios), whose cover art, like their debut CD, was designed by illustrator Susanna Campana. Two songs from the CD were included on the soundtrack for the short film Fib1477, shown in competition at the 63rd Venice Film Festival. During this period, the band’s current nucleus also fell into place and the collaboration with Luca became a more consistent and integral part of the group, both in the studio and live.
This year has been an important one for the band, a time of change and significant events. The most significant was their name change, to Mokadelic. Subsequently, musician Niccolò Fabi invited the group to participate in the fascinating project Violenza 124, for Mokadelic recorded the song “Red July” at the Forum Music Village studio in Roma, with producer Gianluca Vaccaro. Gabriele Salvatores chose Mokadelic to compose the original music for his film As God Commands, based on the novel of the same name by Niccolò Ammaniti.
