For its 18th birthday, the Courmayeur Noir in Festival is giving itself a “Film Palace,” the ultra-modern PalaNoir of Courmayeur, with two perfectly equipped cinemas that for the next six days will host over 40 films, guests from throughout the world, encounters and world premieres. In other words, a profound journey in the widely popular world of mystery, crime stories and fantasy films.
Tonight – before an international jury comprising screenwriter Richard Price, actresses Valentina Lodovini and Astrid Bergès-Frisbey, writer Don Winslow and director Pablo Trapero – we will present the Italian premiere of the thriller The Bank Job, directed by Roger Donaldson (No Exit). The screening will be introduced by actor Jason Faulkner (of Bridget Jones films and Hitman).
The film is based on a spectacular bank robbery of 1971 that stunned London when from the vault of a large bank jewels, money and compromising letters were stolen. Nearly 40 years later, Scotland Yard still has not found the robbers, money or letters that traced back to Queen Elizabeth even.
According to the festival organizers, “This is the ideal film for introducing one of this year’s two themes: Passion for Conspiracy, seeing as how a vast international intrigue lies behind one of the biggest robberies of all time. Moreover, this theme traverses the entire competition, from Canadian title The American Trap, which sheds light on the Kennedy assassination, to Se sarà luce sarà bellissimo, the new film by Aurelio Grimaldi on the assassination of Italian statesman Aldo Moro.”
The other theme of this year’s edition, Women in Noir, which centers on the charismatic personality of Catalan writer Alicia Giménez Bartlett, who will be in the Aosta Valley on December 6 to receive the coveted Raymond Chandler Award for an author’s career; and discussions with writers such as Liza Marklund and Simona Vinci, the TV marathon Donne Assassine, produced by FoxCrime.
But this year the Courmayeur Noir in Festival has many other surprises in store as well, including the documentary competition that is being inaugurated with Gonzalo Arijon’s Stranded; the television series that will be the hits of the upcoming season; the highly anticipated premieres of Mini Noir, such as City of Ember and Beverly Hills Chihuahua; and the irresistible tribute to 007, Italian Style and its guest of honor, Neil Connery, the real-life brother of the world’s most infamous secret agent, who will participate in a Q&A with the public held in collaboration with MINI (the festival’s main partner), as part of Non Aprite Quelle Porte.
Last but certainly not least, we will have many guests this year, beginning with animation designer and director Enzo D'Alò (guest of honor at this year’s Mini Noir and opening ceremony). As well as, over the course of the festival, Victoria Cabello, Dario Vergassola, Ricky Tognazzi, Marco Messeri, Lorella Cuccarini, Francesco Patierno, Martina Stella, Elio Germano, Filippo Timi and Gabriele Salvatores (in Courmayeur on December 7 with the special event Ancora sulla cattiva strada, inspired by As God Commands), Carlo Lucarelli, Dario Argento, Paolo Briguglia, Martina Gedek, Tom Rob Smith, Sharon Bolton, Patrick Fogli, Marco Pagot and many others who are part of the most popular genre in the world: Noir in all its colors in the shadows of Mont Blanc.
