The 18th edition of Courmayeur Noir will take place in Valle d'Aosta, at the foot of Mont Blanc, from November 4-10. 'We’re not only coming of age,” say the three directors, Emanuela Cascia, Marina Fabbri and Giorgio Gosetti, “but are also entering the exclusive club of traditional festivals that guarantee continuity in promoting film culture (and beyond), which Italy’s Venice Film Festival taught the world, and which today must face not only an economic recession, but also an objective cultural emergency. It is a narrow tunnel with an uncertain exit. But we are confident in the originality of our program and our experience with tunnels...' There 40 films, television series and special programs include 10 competition titles vying for the Leone Nero Award; 20 writers chosen from among the 'champions' of the genre throughout the world; two great special events with Gabriele Salvatores (Come Dio Comanda) and Alicia Giménez-Bartlett (Raymond Chandler Award); two discussions, on Noir al Femminile and Passione del Complotto; the return of the Mini Noir workshop; the encounters of Don’t Open That Door; Spazio Italia; three interactive exhibits; and ironic retrospective-tribute by Marco Giusti, organized by the National Cinematheque and dedicated to 007, Italian Style. This edition will also inaugurate, on December 4, the new spaces of the highly modern film complex PalaNoir in Courmayeur with the international premiere of The Bank Job by Roger Donaldson, which the director will present. There will be an original jam session between cinema, music and theatre from Gabriele Salvatores on December 7 – with accomplices Elio Germano, Filippo Timi and the group Mokadelic – that will include clips from his new film Come Dio Comanda, based on the novel by Niccolò Ammaniti. The film jury, which will assign the Leone Nero for Best Film as well as the MINI Award (a Jury Special Mention) and the award for Best Performance this year comprises the Oscar®-nominated screenwriter Richard Price (The Color of Money), writer Don Winslow (creator of Frankie Machine), director Pablo Trapero (Leonera, 2008 Cannes Film Festival) and actresses Valentina Lodovini (The Past is a Foreign Land) and Astrid Berges-Frisbey (The Sea Wall). The most highly anticipated titles in Official Selection are Mexican film Los Bastardos by Amat Escalante (produced by Carlos Reygadas); Canada’s Le piège américain by Charles Binamé (a new take on the Kennedy assassination); Italy’s Io sono viva by the Gentili brothers with Massimo de Santis and Giovanna Mezzogiorno; France’s Ca$h by Eric Besnard with Jean Reno and Valeria Golino; US films Frozen River (winner of the Sundance Film Festival), Whisper with Lost star Josh Holloway and My Name is Bruce (a comic self-portrait by Bruce Campbell); and Asian box office hit The Chaser (by Korea’s Na Hong-jin). Two further internationally acclaimed titles will be announced over the next few days. Through our collaboration with the Fondazione Palazzo Strozzi we will host the interactive exhibit 'Il Giallo dell'Impressionista' in the new PalaNoir, where we will also present the designs of the new competition 'Noir in Comics.' The Centro Congressi will present an exhibit on conspiracies designed by the students of the IED of Milan that will also be part of the Mini Noir workshop. Other parallel initiatives will be held in Saint Vincent, Morgex, Salle (in collaboration with the Fondazione Sapegno) as well as in Courmayeur. 'This edition is packed with guests and wonderful events,” says Giorgio Gosetti, “as will also be open to the new as hardly ever before. We have chosen films, authors and themes with the desire to discover and anticipate new fashions and trends. Beginning with the protagonists of Spazio Italia, in which we will speak of Italian film and TV of the upcoming months.” The Courmayeur Noir in Festival is organized by Cooperativa STUDIO with support from the General Direction for Cinema of the Ministry of Culture, the Valle d'Aosta Region, the City of Courmayeur and Aiat Monte Bianco. The festival’s main sponsor is the MINI Group and the official media partner, FoxCrime.
