Festival Presentation

MORE AND MORE NOIR…

Norman Mailer called film noir the only great popular form of cinema, a theatre of art that the truck driver and the poet, uncultured teenagers and the bourgeoisie with refined tastes all understand and enjoy.
This is the unforgettable world of the Noir in Festival waiting for you, every year on December.

AN UNMISSABLE EVENT

8 films in competition, the best premieres in the genre, awarded by a prestigious jury with the Noir Award for Best Film, a prize for Best Performance and a Jury Special Mention. Tributes to the history of the genre and discoveries of cutting-edge filmmakers to define new trends, with retrospectives and special homages.

Noir literature is celebrated by the best crime writers from all over the world, presenting to the audience their last works but also by the prestigious Raymond Chandler Award for life achievement to a great International maestro, and the Giorgio Scerbanenco Award to the best Italian crime novel of the year.

International panels and workshops complete a wide range examination of our contemporary society and its problems which is one of the main theme of the noir genre. These are just few of the many reasons why in 2007 Variety has included the festival in the list of the 50 Unmissable Events worldwide.

NOIR IN FESTIVAL ON SCREEN

In its long tradition of enquiring on the thriller genre, the festival has presented a complete panorama of Italian genre cinema from the 1940s to the 1970s; a fresh look at renowned masters such as Alfred Hitchcock, Pierre Chenal, Orson Welles, William Friedkin, Jules Dassin and Robert Wise; and new filmmakers such as Wes Craven, Sam Raimi, John Woo, Quentin Tarantino, Takashi Miike (in 1999 his first Western retrospective was in Courmayeur, at the festival), Sabu and Park Chan-wook.
