Elia Contini just about gets by being a private investigator, though most of his assignments range from petty theft to lost pets. Until the day he’s hired to track down a businessman who’s vanished, and the plot thickens. Mario Balmelli, the owner of an interior decorating firm, dreams of saying goodbye to all that and pursuing his dream of playing the saxophone, with his own blue note summoning up solitude, insecurity, emotional awakenings and leisurely sunsets that seem to last forever. But just when he gets up the nerve to make his break, everything falls apart. The economic crisis deepens, a fraud involves Italian commuters who cross the Swiss border to go to work, and a madman savagely attacks Mario’s own family.
