Chong was a highly gifted detective who was accidentally blinded during an investigation. Since then he assists the police on cold cases, thanks to his intuition and incredible deductive skills. Tung is an up-and-coming detective who has been wracked with guilt ever since her childhood friend Minnie disappeared without a trace, perhaps the victim of a serial killer who at the time had killed a number of girls. Tung turns to Chong to her help her solve the old case.
"There’s a romantic element to this film, as well as many humorous moments, which relaxes viewers, who can also admire the beauty of the two leads, Andi Lau and Sammy Cheng. Life is short, we have to learn to appreciate the positive things, in real life and onscreen. Plus I came up with the story after having come up against the bureaucracy and rules of Chinese censorship, and I don’t think I exaggerated with the violence." [Johnnie To]
Johnnie To has directed over 40 films and produced as many. He began his career in the 1970s working for the TVB network as a director, screenwriter and producer. In 1980 he made his feature debut, The Enigmatic Case. Commercial success came in 1989 with All About Ah-Long. Three years later he made the equally successful The Heroic Trio. In 1996 he and Wai Ka Fai founded the production company Milkyway Image and he began making more personal, original and visionary films across a wide range of genres. Running out of Time (1999), The Mission (1999), Fulltime Killer, (2001), PTU (2003) and Breaking News (2004) are just a few of his biggest hits. In 2005, Election was presented in Competition at the Cannes Film Festival. The following year, Exiled played in competition at the Venice Film Festival, at which he served on the International Jury in 2008. In 2009 he won the Black Lion Award in Courmayeur for Vengeance.
