Following a shootout that left his two partners respectively dead and paralyzed, Chief Detective Carl Mørck is assigned to Department Q, for unsolved and closed cases, which he run with an assistant, Assad. Although they get explicit orders to only read and sort through the cases, only a single day passes before Carl looks into the mysterious disappearance of Merete Lynggaard, a politician who vanished five years earlier from a passenger ferry. The only witness is her brain-damaged brother, who was found on the car deck, screaming at the top of his lungs. The case was put to rest as an apparent suicide. Not convinced by this explanation, and against their superiors’ orders, Carl and Assad continue investigating.
"This is a story about the dark side of life, what happens if you cannot let go of the past, when it devours you from within. This is, on the surface, a story about a woman who disappeared five years ago and the man who has to find out what happened. But underneath it all, this is a story of how humans deal with the horrific things that happen throughout life, and the ability to move on or not. This is a thriller that explores what it means to be human in an old-fashioned way. It explores our fear, guilt and shame, and how to overcome them." [Mikkel Nørgaard]
Mikkel Nørgaard graduated from The National Film School of Denmark in 2001 and worked as an AD for diverse directors, including Lone Scherfig, Lars von Trier and Kaspar Rostrup. He has directed many major television series, such as Langt fra Las Vegas (2003), Anna Pihl (2006) and Borgen (2010-2011). His feature film debut Klown (2010) was based on the hugely popular sitcom Clown (2005-2009), which he also directed. The Keeper of Lost Causes is his second feature film.
