Inspired by real life events, the film tells the story of three teenagers, the so-called West Memphis Three, who in 1993 were convicted of the murder of three eight-year-old children as part of what was allegedly a satanic ritual. The conviction, which immediately sparked heated debates, was based on inconsistent evidence. Suspicions over a wrongful conviction were further fuelled by private investigator Ron Lax and later Pam Hobbs, the mother of one of the three murdered children. Damien Echols, Jessie Misskelley Jr. and Jason Baldwin were released last year after 20 years in prison.

After four documentaries and the way that story has persisted, it has become a story that I think will be looked at and reinterpreted because it is one of the most exhaustively examined pieces of crime and certainly a murder story outside of a celebrity or president. I can’t think of any other story that’s been unsolved, which remains at some level mysterious, and also which has been subject to such scrutiny. You go on the Internet, and it’s kind of amazing, these sites that are devoted to every piece of testimony, every piece of evidence. It has lingered in the American consciousness in a certain way, and I think it’s ripe for dramatic retelling, a reinvestigation that’s not bound by the orthodoxies of documentary." [Atom Egoyan]

Atom Egoyan, born in Cairo to parents of Armenian origin, moved to Canada at the age of three. He made his directorial debut in 1979 with the short Howard in Particular, and in 1984 directed his first feature film, Next of Kin. He also directed several episodes of the television series The Twilight Zone and Alfred Hitchcock Presents. His films include Exotica (1994, FIPRESCI Prize winner at the Cannes Film Festival), the film that won him international fame; The Sweet Hereafter (1997, winner of the Special Grand Jury Prize at Cannes), inspired by the Russell Banks novel; the thriller Felicia’s Journey (1999); Ararat (2002); Where the Truth Lies (2005, in Competition at Cannes); and Chloe (2009), a remake of Anne Fontaine’s Nathalie.
