Offstage is a journey through a labyrinth of memories made up of underworld connections, torment, guilt, secrets and reflections on how some life stories could have and should have played out differently. Prison is where the destinies of these men and actors merged and where our story became one of hope and of art as an instrument for redemption. The film looks at the lives of these prisoners, who are serving long or life sentences, and embodies the criminal history that has traversed Italy: the Mafia, the Camorra, the Banda della Magliana and international drug trafficking.
"I began working as a journalist many years ago but recently had distanced myself more and more from reality, by creating, adapting and shaping it to my liking. Even though I like documentaries, I had never tried to make one before, and probably wouldn’t have if producer Sante Giavazzi and Antonio Turco hadn’t asked me to film a play of the Stabile Assai theatre company. I’d never seen them perform before, nor had I seen Caesar Must Die by the Taviani brothers, which had just come out. I met them when they were rehearsing a play and was bowled over. They had stories and life experiences that needed to be told. I was enthralled. I had to make a documentary about them." [Francesco Cinquemani]
After an extensive career in journalism, Francesco Cinquemani currently writes and directs Light News, Istituto Luce Cinecittà's new, weekly YouTube film magazine. He created and wrote the RAI Movie sitcomVirus (59 episodes from 2010-12), and co-wrote the TV filmBuio, starring Valentina Cervi, Andrea Osvart, Margareth Madè and Kasia Smutniak. As a screenwriter, producer and/or director, he has made 60 animated and live-action shorts that screened at numerous film festivals. He writes and co-directs Ciufoli tra le stelle for Sky Cinema and wrote the "Antimafia Ritroviamo l’onore" and "Vota Vesuvio" campaigns. Offstage is his first, feature-length documentary.
