Il gigante sfregiato, which centers on private investigator Max Mariani, only seems like a far cry from Enrico Vanzina’s films. "This is my first novel," he says. "I’ve written a lot in my life: over 100 films, around 2,000 articles, a play, five non-fiction books. But I’d never found the right inspiration to tackle a novel. Then, about five years ago, I woke up one morning with a plot in my head. I never thought I’d write a hardboiled story, even though it’s a genre I love." Mariani is a wealthy ex-lawyer with great intuition, a Porsche, and a penchant for booze and high-class call girls. Moving just as deftly among captains of industry and the slums, the novel is not just the story of a rugby player and a blond, but a portrait of Rome at its extremes, from its fanciest neighborhoods to its most marginalized outskirts. "It’s a detective story that descends directly from Chandler. The main character is a typical private eye, heartbreak has made him misogynous, and he lives in a world where femme fatales are classic femme fatales. All these elements, instead of floating in the humus of Los Angeles, float in a desolate Rome." A Rome that only seems unbearable: "As Ennio Flaiano wrote years ago, I’m starting to like Rome’s defects. Rome’s dynamic vices are better than the apathetic virtues of other capitals."
Enrico Vanzina (Rome, 1949), the oldest son of Stefano Vanzina (Steno), in the 1980s, began writing, along with his director brother Carlo, some of Italy’s biggest comedies, capturing like few other the transformations in traditions and morals that Italy was undergoing. He made his screenwriting debut in 1976 with Luna di miele in tre, directed by Carlo. He would go on to make diverse cult films that were also box office hits, including Febbre da cavallo (1976): Sapore di mare (1983); films starring Jerry Calà, Diego Abatantuono, Renato Pozzetto and Enrico Montesano; Via Montenapoleone (1986); Yuppies (1986); and the more recent Vacanze di Natale a Cortina (2011) and Mai Stati Uniti (2013), also comedies. Vanzina has always also written for the theatre, non-fiction books, and newspaper articles (mostly for Il Corriere della Sera and Il Messaggero).
